Writing A Good CV; 9 mistakes You Should Avoid in Writing a Good CV.
There are so many ways of writing a good CV. We’re often advised to put various kinds of information on our CV. But in our attempt to make the CV impressive, we tend to get carried away.
To me, i believe part of the reasons why most job seekers don’t get employed eventually is their curriculum vitae, most people add too much irrelevant details or make simple errors that makes employers decline their applications.
From several seminars and lectures on employment that i have attended,i found out that its not all about your qualification or how good you think you’re fit for a job, if you cannot present yourself well in you CV, providing the right and relevant information needed, you may still lose the opportunity at the end of the day.
this article is published to guide, and to help avoid this 9 mistakes that affects a good CV.
Here is a list of 9 mistakes that you should avoid putting on your CV.
- Too much personal information: Your name, contact information and employment history details are relevant and necessary, so you must have them on your CV. However, you needn’t offer too much personal information. Avoid having your photo on the CV. Nor should you feel the need to specify your gender, age, sexual orientation, religion or caste. While there is no harm in doing so, it may unnecessarily bias the employers against you. So, it is best to avoid such personal details.
- Irrelevant work experience: Read the job description carefully and modify your CV accordingly. Recruiters prefer and pay more attention to short and clear CVs, so it is advisable to exclude work experience that is in no way relevant to the job you’re applying for.
- Spelling and grammatical errors: Spelling mistakes and poor grammar on the CV is surprisingly very common. One in every two persons is likely to have an error of this nature on his/her CV. Be sure to check your spellings thoroughly (including names of organisations, names of people, titles of degrees, etc.). Use a spell check if you’re not too sure of your spelling. It’s also a good idea to get someone else to read your CV to point out any mistakes.
- A quirky email ID: Back when email was still new and trendy, most of us went ahead and created email IDs with some very quirky usernames that had very little do with our real names. However, when you’re putting your email ID on your CV, make sure that it’s a fairly uncomplicated and serious-sounding one (i.e. it has something to do with your name). Recruiters tend to take people with appropriate email IDs more seriously.
- Negative language: You have to be sure to sound positive in your CV. Don’t refer to your previous job as a “mistake” or as a “waste of time” or even “boring”. Instead, use words and phrases that have a positive impact on the reader, such as “valuable experience”. Even if you feel negatively about an ex-boss or a previous job, don’t express it in your CV. Moreover, don’t emphasise what you think may be your shortcomings. Focus on your qualities, skills and positive traits.
- Incomplete or false information: We all like to use our CVs to make ourselves look good. But if you bend the truth or lie in any way (about your previous roles, qualifications, etc.), it will mostly likely be found out and you will be disqualified. Maintaining honesty and accuracy on your CV is of utmost importance.
- Too much information: A good CV is always a short CV. It is not necessary to list out all the things that you have done in your career. Recruiters prefer to engage with candidates who can tell the irrelevant info apart from the relevant details. Stick to the key roles, projects and skills. If you’re a fresher, a one-page CV on an A4 size sheet is a good length. Two pages are acceptable for experienced candidates.
- Unrelated hobbies: If you must mention your hobbies, stick to only a select few, and especially to the ones that you think may be relevant to the job. For instance, mentioning hobbies like “collecting stamps”, or even achievements like “won the singing competition in school” have no relevance.
- Too much creative expression: Sure, you want your CV to look good and to stand apart from the rest. But is your CV easy to read? That’s the first thing that matters to the recruiters. Don’t use fancy words, stylised fonts, images, and underlined or bold text. Keep the format clean and easy to read.
Thanks for reading, i hope you are able to understand the 9 mistakes that you should avoid in preparing a good CV. Comment and share this post with your friends if you find it helpful.
‘Finish Your Refinery Before 2019’- FG Begs Dangote
The Federal Government has said it relies heavily on the Dangote refinery to fulfil its promise to Nigerians to end fuel importation by December 2019.
To this end, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu, who visited the Dangote oil Refinery site at Lekki free trade Zone, in Lagos said the government was ready to play its part as a responsible government to assist in making sure the project is completed before the scheduled date.
The minister who said he was overwhelmed by the dimension of the project explained that the present government had always believed that the private sector holds the ace in industrialization efforts of the government, noted that that belief has been reinforced by what the Dangote Group is doing.
He said: It is good to say that private sector is the answer to Nigerian’s problems with a project as big as this. The challenge I will give you today is that of time, I see your time for completion is 2019 December but I am sure you will understand my greed if I tell you that the refinery component of this project should come earlier than the set date.
“I have made very firm commitment to Nigerians that I must stop the importation of petroleum products by 2019 and I am going to keep to it. It is absolutely important that we do this early and given the feat that we have achieved in terms of speed of construction and I urge you to do all within you to achieve its completion before the due date.
“I am sure His Excellency President Buhari will be absolutely enthused if he were to find himself, not only crystalizing the policy position we have taken so far but also coming here himself to come and open a facility as big as this before the end of his first term.
“Whatever configurations your engineers have come up with, I urge that they go back to the drawing board and get me my refined products before your said date.”
In his response to the government’s challenge, Dangote said he has accepted the challenge and would do all possible to achieve the feat.
In this regard, the President of Dangote Group, stated: “on the honourable minister’s challenge, we are going to make it by the grace of God. I am sure the minister will support us to make sure that we meet his challenge.
“What the minister is trying to do is the best so far for our country, his own version is that Nigeria should not think of exporting crude, you know the problem we have in Africa is that we only export raw materials, not finished goods, so he is saying that, look, we should all do this by adding value and I pray that even at 2.5million barrels, we should not export much, in terms of the crude.
“We will go back and see what to do to make this happen by fast tracking our processes since the Minister has assured of government’s cooperation and support.”
Earlier in his welcome address, Dangote explained that his group is building the world’s largest single line Refinery, Petrochemical Complex and the world’s second largest Urea Fertiliser plant. The Refinery, according to him will have the capacity to refine 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The Petrochemical Plant will produce 780 KTPA Polypropylene, 500 KTPA of Polyethylene while the Fertiliser project will produce 3.0 million metric tonnes per annum (mmtpa) of Urea.
“In addition, we are also building the largest sub-sea pipeline infrastructure in any country in the world, with a length of 1,100km, to handle 3 billion SCF of gas per day. We also plan to construct a 570 MW power plant in this complex. As a matter of fact, gas from our gas pipeline will augment the natural domestic gas supply and we estimate an additional 12,000MW of power generation can be added to the grid with the additional gas from our system.
“We will be adding value to our economy as all these projects will be creating about 4,000 direct and 145,000 indirect jobs. We will also save over $7.5billion for Nigeria annually, through import substitution and generate an additional $5.5billion per annum through exports of the refined petroleum products, fertilizer and petro chemicals. We envisage that these projects, which would cost over $18billion, would be completed in 2019.
Aso Villa Staff Put On Standby For The Imminent Return Of President Buhari (Read)
All is now set for President Muhammadu Buhari’s return from the United Kingdom as State House staff have been put on standby.
Daily Trust learnt that some family members of the president and his wife’s security aides arrived Abuja yesterday.
An aide to the wife of the president hinted that Mrs Aisha Buhari might also return to Nigeria Wednesday.
President Buhari has been in the United Kingdom since May 7 undergoing treatment for an undisclosed ailment.
Mrs Buhari’s aide said: “The information just reached me now from the wife of the president, that everything is set for the return of Mr President to Nigeria. Already, some of the president’s family members and security aides of madam (Aisha Buhari) have just returned from London.
“The wife of the president may either leave London on Wednesday or decide to come home with the president anytime soon. We have been told to be on standby because Mr President is returning any time soon this week.”
Some staff of the State House, including security operatives, also said they got a directive yesterday, asking them to be on standby for the president’s return.
The staff, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, however added that the directive did not contain any specific date for the president’s return.
“We were only instructed to be ready for the return of the president at any moment. No specific date has been mentioned to us,” one of the staff said.
Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, had last Tuesday quoted Buhari to have told the president of Guinea, Alpha Conde that he was making good progress and that he would return to his duties as soon as doctors advise.
Yesterday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said Buhari received a goodwill message from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Shehu, in a statement, quoted the CAN President, Rev Samson Ayokunle, as describing the news of Buhari’s recovery as “a rejuvenation of hope” and congratulating Nigerians “on the joy of having their president back soon.”
Shehu said: “Such messages of goodwill from respected religious bodies like CAN meant so much at a time, when people with ill intentions were struggling to divide the country along religious lines. He also thanked the CAN for its continued prayers for the President’s health.
“The Presidency looks forward to further collaborations with CAN to ensure that Nigerians of all ethnic and religious groups benefit from the policies of the President Buhari administration which are aimed at improving the welfare of every single citizen of our great country.”
