Police detain journalist over critical Facebook posts

The police in Katsina State on Saturday night detained a journalist, Danjuma Katsina, over postings on Facebook alleged to be critical of a newly-elected member of the House of Representatives from the state, Mansur Mashi.

Police sources said the lawmaker formally lodged a complaint about the Facebook postings to the police.

Danjuma was, however, released on Sunday afternoon following the directives of the state police commissioner, Mr. Usman Abdullahi, and intervention from various personalities in the state.

Danjuma confirmed his release to Northern City News, pointing out that the matter had been resolved.

He said he went to the police headquarters on the invitation of the police on Saturday night, but was detained overnight.

But the state police command Public Relations Officer, DSP Gambo Isah, denied that Danjuma was detained, stressing that he was merely invited for questioning.

Oscar-winning actor, Martin Landau, dies at 89

Actor Martin Landau, whose versatile screen career stretched from the 1960s TV series “Mission: Impossible” to his Oscar-winning turn in “Ed Wood,” has died at 89, his publicist said Sunday.

Brooklyn-born Landau died Saturday of unexpected complications during a hospital stay in Los Angeles, according to a statement issued by publicist Dick Guttman.

“We are overcome with sadness to report the death of iconic actor Martin Landau,” said the statement. “He had just celebrated his 89th birthday.”

Landau got his start on broadway in the 1950s, before a 1959 film debut in Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest.”

hHis film roles ranged from the grand to the quirky, from “Cleopatra,” to “The Greatest Story Ever Told” and “Nevada Smith.”

That was before he met with massive success playing the master of disguise Rollin Hand in the “Mission: Impossible” TV series — in which his wife Barbara Bain also starred. He was nominated for three Emmys and a Golden Globe in 1968.

In the 1980s, Landau made a strong screen comeback starring in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1988 “Tucker: The Man and His Dream,” and Woody Allen’s “Crimes and Misdemeanors” the following year. He earned Oscar nominations for both.

But it was not until 1994 that he scooped up the Best Supporting Oscar playing horror film star Bela Lugosi in Tim Burton’s “Ed Wood.”

In recent years he starred on television hits “Entourage” and “Without a Trace.”

‘Game of Thrones’ begins season seven As Winter Kicks Off

“Game of Thrones” returned for its season seven premiere Sunday, ending a longer-than-usual wait for fans craving its unique weekly offer of sex, violence and dragons.

HBO had delayed production, meaning four more months of anticipation ahead of the season debut — already one of the television events every year across the world.

But viewers were not disappointed, taking to social media in the thousands to express delight at the explosive start opening, the arrival of dragon queen Daenerys Targaryen in Westeros and a widely-hyped cameo by pop sensation Ed Sheeran.

“There are very few shows that can deliver as much action and excitement as the season six ‘Game of Thrones’ finale, and there are perhaps even fewer shows that can make a table-setting episode this much fun,” the Hollywood Reporter said after the premiere.

“So it’s all the more bittersweet that not only is winter here, but the end is in sight.”

The debut episode, entitled “Dragonstone,” saw evil Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), now the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, making alliances that threaten newly-anointed King of the North Jon Snow (Kit Harington).

Trained poisoner and throat-slitter in chief Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) exploded out of the blocks in a shocking opening by taking vengeance on the killers of her family at the infamous Red Wedding.

The comic relief was provided by multiple Grammy-winning Sheeran in a cameo as a soldier who sang a ditty — a “new one,” apparently — about a woman’s hand.

His appearance started a torrent of memes and excited comments from fans on Twitter, but not everyone was pleased to see him.

Variety magazine called the cameo “ridiculous” while one fan on Twitter quipped: “If Arya kills Ed Sheeran it’ll be worth it.”

– ‘More humour‘ –
For hours either side of the HBO premiere at 9:00 pm (0100 GMT Monday) on the US east coast, #GoTS7 and #GameofThrones were the top trending Twitter hashtags worldwide

Such was the online interest that the HBO.com website even crashed due to a surge in visitors for the first half of the episode.

For some celebrity fans, the wait had been too much — especially for those on the US West Coast who were made to wait an extra three hours.

“There is no amount of ‘keeping myself busy’ that makes the wait for #GameOfThrones7 any less painful,” tweeted Josh Gad — Olaf from “Frozen.”

“Twitterverse shut your mouth until 10:00 PM when I’m done watching,” he snarled as the show began on the East Coast, the HBO Now streaming subscription service and in foreign markets.

“Game of Thrones,” tells the story of noble families vying for control of the Iron Throne, all the while keeping one eye on the “White Walkers” leading hordes of the undead toward an invasion from the North.

The show, which has more Emmy Awards than any other narrative series and pulls in more than 20 million US viewers per episode, moved beyond George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels in season six.

It is due to run for a shortened seven episodes this year before returning for a six-episode final season.

“As per every premiere episode of ‘Game of Thrones,’ the pace is slow,” wrote Lorraine Ali in the Los Angeles Times.

“Setting up each new carefully constructed season — the complex weave of story lines, the huge cast, the breathtaking locations — takes time.”

But she concluded that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had “pulled it off once again, if not with a bit more humour than in previous seasons.”

One dies as Ibadan Egungun festival turn violent

The Oyo State Police Command on Monday confirmed the death of one person in the violence that trailed the public outing of the Ege masquerade in Ibadan on Sunday.

The police spokesman in the state, ASP Adekunle Ajisebutu, said in Ibadan on Monday that two suspects were also arrested in connection with the incident.

Violence had marred the Egungun festival on Sunday as many residents were assaulted while properties were destroyed.

The festival, which often featured displays by masquerades, is meant to showcase the rich culture and tradition of Ibadanland.

Ajisebutu, however, said that the command had beefed up security in the area where the Egungun festival was taking place.

He said the state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Odude, had warned all masquerades and their followers to refrain from violence.

The police, he said, would not hesitate to deal with any individual or group attempting to cause a breach of the peace.

Meanwhile, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has expressed displeasure with Sunday’s violence.

He said several meetings were held with stakeholders on the need to keep the peace before the festival commenced.

Adetunji, who commiserated with victims of the violence and their families, pledged that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

Oil prices hit $49 a barrel, thanks to America

A slow down of oil drilling by American shale oil producers helped to move oil prices to $49 a barrel in Monday trading, a good news for oil exporters such as Nigeria.

Brent crude , the global benchmark, was up 8 cents at $48.99 a barrel by 1341 GMT. U.S. crude traded at $46.57, up 3 cents.

According to Reuters, fewer drilling rigs were added in the United States last week, helping ease concerns that surging shale supplies will undermine OPEC-led production cuts.

U.S. drillers added two oil rigs in the week to July 14, bringing the total to 765, Baker Hughes said on Friday. Rig additions over the past four weeks averaged five, the slowest pace of growth since November.

A sharp drop in U.S. crude inventories in the week to July 7 supported prices last week. But crude stocks in industrialized nations remained high, putting a brake on the oil price rally.

“The market is not doing too much today – it feels like wait and see,” said Olivier Jakob of oil analyst Petromatrix. “There is some rebalancing in products, but overall the layers of stocks are still very large.”

Oil prices are less than half their mid-2014 level because of a persistent glut, even after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries with Russia and other non-OPEC producers cut supplies since January.

While OPEC-led cuts have offered prices some support, rising supplies from Nigeria and Libya, two OPEC states exempt from the pact, and increasing U.S. production have weighed on the market.

Kuwait said on Friday the market was on a recovery track due to rising demand and said it was premature to cap Nigerian and Libyan output. An OPEC and non-OPEC committee meets in Russia on July 24 to discuss the impact of the deal.

In a sign of strong demand, data on Monday showed refineries in China increased crude throughput in June to the second highest on record. OPEC is hoping higher demand in the second half will get rid of excess inventories.

“There is almost an agreement that the second half of the year should be tighter than the first half due to significant jumps in demand forecasts,” oil broker PVM said. “The net result is a rise in the demand for OPEC oil.”

214,952 students cheated in WASSCE

Some 214,952 candidates cheated in the May-June West African Senior School Certificate Examination(WASSCE) and their results have been seized by the authorities.

Mr. Olu Adenipekun, Head of National Office of the West African Examination Council, WAEC, announced this in Lagos as he also announced the cheering news of a seven percent improvement in the number of candidates that passed the examination with five credits.

Last year, 52.9 percent of the candidates recorded the feat. The number jumped to 59.22 percent this year, out of the 1,559,662 candidates that sat for the examination.

Adenipekun said WAEC is still investigating the exam cheats and that the schools of the students would be duly informed soon.

“The cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate committee of the council in due course for consideration.

“The committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their schools,’’ he said.

He said that 923,486 of the 1,559,162 candidates that sat for the examination, obtained a minimum of credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

The official said the percentage of candidates in this category in the WASSCE for school candidates was an improvement on what was obtained in the same examination in both 2015 and 2016, with 38.68 and 52.97 respectively.

Giving a further breakdown of the results, the WAEC boss said that 1,084,214 candidates, representing 69.94 per cent, obtained credits and above in six subjects.

He said that 1,243,772 candidates, representing 87.05 per cent, obtained credits and above in four subjects.

Adenipekun added that 1,436,024 candidates, representing 92.44 per cent, obtained credits and above in three subjects, while 1,490,356, representing 95.59 per cent, obtained credits and above in two subjects.

He added that of the 1,559,162 candidates that sat for the examination, 1,471,151, representing 94.36 per cent, had their results fully processed and released.

The official said that 95,734 others, representing 5.64 per cent, had a few of their subjects still being processed due to errors traceable to the candidates in the course of registration or writing the examination.

“Such errors are being corrected by the council to enable the affected candidates get their results fully processed and released subsequently,’’ Adenipekun said.

The head of national office commended the supervisors, examiners, and other persons for their immense contributions in ensuring a smooth conduct of the examination.

“The coordination and marking of candidates’ scripts for the 2017 WASSCE for schools was successfully held between May 24 and June 11 at 83 marking venues spread across the country.

“Having said this, we will like to state also that the Nigeria National Office of the council has concluded arrangements to commence the conduct of the WASSCE for private candidates from January/ February 2018.

“This is part of our commitment in ensuring quality service delivery to the Nigerian public.

“I also want to seize this opportunity to inform you that with the upgrade of the council’s ICT facilities, particularly the recently commissioned HP Converged System – a private cloud, the compability of the council’s ICT has now been enhanced,’’ he said.

The WAEC official called on candidates who sat for the examination to check the details of their performance on the council’s result website within the next few hours.

Naira Maintains Strength Against Dollar As Nigeria Gradually Gets Out Of Recession

The Nigerian Naira on Monday, July 17, maintained its strength at the parallel market as it stayed unchanged against the Dollar, Pound Sterling and Euro.

According to NAIJ.com’s findings, the local currency closed the day at N367, N470 and N420 against the Dollar, Pound Sterling and the Euro respectively.

This comes even as President, Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, disclosed that the nation’s currency would remain stable in the months to come as long as the CBN sustains its interventions at forex market.

Gwadabe said that the sustained injection of liquidity to the nation’s foreign exchange market had paralysed the activities of speculators.

He described the calculated interventions of the apex bank since February as one of the greatest onslaughts to the camp of currency speculators in the recent past.

Since the Naira dropped to a record low of N520/$1 in February, the CBN has injected a total of $7.8 billion into the foreign exchange market.

In February the apex bank injected $680 million into the market, $1.542 billion in March; $1.616 billion in April; $2.102 billion in May; and $1.436 billion in June and $390 million in the first week of July.

Meanwhile, the National Bureau of Statistics in a report released on Monday July 17, revealed that the Nigeria is gradually coming out of recession as Inflation in June 2017 declines again for 5th consecutive month.

According to the bureau, inflation measured by the Consumer Price Index, fell to 16.10 per cent, lower than 16.25 per cent rate recorded in May.

5 Ways To Maintain A Long Term Relationship

5 Ways To Maintain A Long Term Relationship

Sometimes, relationships can be so stressful, relationships are always tough, and things don’t get any easier as time goes on.

With most long-term relationships, there are going to be periods of stress and speed bumps of tedium along the way but that doesn’t mean it should break up the relationship.

To make a relationship work you have to be aware of the inevitable lulls or moments of doubts and make plans to counteract them, just because you’ve been together a long time doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun being in the relationship.

So what does it take to make a long-term relationship work?below are some tips to make long- term relationship work.

1. Embrace flaws/Faults: “Once you’re in a relationship, remember the old wise saying “nobody’s perfect”, when you fall for someone your initial attraction can stop you noticing your new partner’s flaws, or at least override them but as things progress, you learn more about each other – both the good and the bad so to get through this stage, you need to be understanding and caring, for your partner to be willing to open up and show the real them is a huge part of showing their trust in you, so be kind and gracious”.

2. Don’t rush: “Enjoy the present and don’t constantly worry about what the other is thinking, there are various stages of a relationship and the third involves questioning your relationship, as you look to make someone a part of your life long-term, you may question whether the relationship (rather than the person) is right for you so going slow diminishes the risk of that”.

3. Always be yourself: “Being true to yourself is crucial to making a relationship last, being honest with yourself about what you want out of life, and out of your relationship is a must so don’t withhold or dilute your views, it’s not necessary to spill all at once of course, but be mindful to tell the truth when asked and do your best to be upfront”.

4. Balance: “You don’t have to compromise your independence, you need to make room for your partner in your life but not at the expense of everything else – friends are crucial too and a good way to balance your personal life”.

5. Communication is key: “Don’t be afraid to let your guard down and if you’re hiding your feelings, don’t expect your other half to be a mind reader – sadly, that’s not a built in function, it’s a two-way street, so listening is also vital”.

ASUU Lists Condition For Re-Opening University

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, has insisted that its members would not return to work, unless their demands from Oyo and Osun State Governments are met.

This was disclosed by the Chairman of ASUU, LAUTECH, Dr Abiodun Olaniran, while speaking in Ibadan yesterday.

“Issue of ultimate survival of the institution as a proper university in the comity of other universities elsewhere” was never negotiable.

“While ASUU is eager to put this ugly situation in LAUTECH behind us, we are interested in a honest and holistic address of the issues that forced us to proceed on the current strike.

“It is gratifying that even the visitation panel set up by the owner states clearly called attention to this problem,” Olaniran said.

In response to the call by Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, he added: “For the Governor to be calling on the striking staff who have been reduced to paupers due to months of unpaid salaries is the peak of insensitivity to the plight of the workers.”

LAUTECH has almost lost a session as a result of the strike.

See The 6 Secrets Of Every Successful Students Lazy Students Lacks

See The 6 Secrets Of Every Successful Students Lazy Students Lacks

Having the right habit is what differentiate smart students from the rest. They cultivate these habits daily that, with time, turn to principles. You might be familiar with any of these habits, but it is the complete use of all that leads to better creativity and productivity.

Here are 6 daily habits of highly successful students;

1. Daily goal setting: The habit of setting goals is an important one, as it creates a sense of purpose and direction. Students who sets daily goals use their time effectively and increase their self-esteem and self-respect at the thought of completing their set goals.
The psychology behind this is that; if you achieve your set objective on a daily basis, you will experience some level of self-satisfaction that leads to greater self-respect and improve self-esteem.

2. Daily reading habit: Student who are successful have recognized the need to read daily as it’s a way of strengthening their brain muscle. It is like going to the gym every day to build your physical muscle, if you fail to go regularly, you will not achieve any tangible result. Daily reading habit is crucial to achieving academic excellence.

3. Self-discipline: The discipline of oneself in order to achieve one’s set objectives is very important in every aspects of life. Without self-discipline, no one goal is achievable. This is because the goals you set are task and this task takes energy and considerable effort to complete. To complete this tasks requires a lot of self-discipline i.e doing what you have to do when you have to do it whether you like it or not. There is always the temptation to go for instant gratification, to go for what is considered more pleasing and fun, but top student don’t fall for this temptation. They complete the task any way.
Remember, whenever you force yourself to complete a task, you become happy at the thought of its completion but whenever you leave your tasks undone, you become sad and depress. If this continue, you will lose your self-esteem. So, it is worth it to kind of force yourself to complete a task and be happy to improve your self-worth and self-respect.

4. Proper time management: Successful students have also realized that a good use of their time is important to achieving success. They set time for every task and measure their performance within this time. If they experience low performance, they improve the next time and then the next time, until they are excellent.

5. Result oriented: Smart students understand that a good sign of completing a task is by achieving the desired result. So, no task is completed without achieving the desired result. They always take inventory of whether they have achieved what they said they would on a daily basis.
6. People oriented: They seek to help other people out by teaching what they know. This way they get to learn more themselves. They understand the mathematics of giving, that 2+2 is not equal to 4 but 5 when it comes to teaching others what they know.

Every Student Makes This 6 Common Mistakes During Examination

Every Student Makes This Common Mistakes Make During Examination

“I did the examination very well but still failed” . Have you ever been guilty of this statement? If yes, then you must read this article to the end.

You might have written the examination perfectly but you have failed to take note of some mistakes that cost you lots of mark. This is one of the reasons why students fail examinations. What are these costly mistakes you need to avoid during examination?,

See them below.

#1. READING THE WRONG QUESTION

There is no way you can give the correct answer to the wrong question. What do I mean by this? Take a look at some of the questions that involves the word “NOT”. You might be asked, “Which of the following is not a verb?” and you are provided with the options (a) Read (b) Book (c) Jump (d) Write.

A lot of student will choose option A immediately without checking other options. Why? Because they thought the question was “Which of the following is a verb?”.

I was once a victim of this occurrence. I discovered it is due to fear or being in a rush while reading the question. You can read my article on “6 Sure Ways To Overcome Examination Fear”.

What to do: Read each question carefully at least twice and make sure you understand it.

#2. ANSWERING QUESTIONS OUTGOING OF POINT

Students fail examination because they have failed to answer questions within the required course. Some students want to explain more than required. As a result, they write out of point. You might think you will bag some bonus marks by including additional explanation but end up scoring very low.

Do not misquote! It is not a bad idea giving additional information in your answers but ensure you do not write out of point . You might be writing something meaningful but does not fit into the question asked.

While some markers like this, most don’t . Since you don’t know the type of person that will mark your examination, the best thing to do is to avoid it.

What to do: Don’t write unnecessary information unless it is within the course of the question. Ensure you write answers that suits the questions asked.

#3. ATTEMPTING DIFFICULT QUESTIONS FIRST

Another costly mistake students make is leaving simple questions untouched and attempting difficult ones first. This is a very bad idea that you should not even think of. You might be thinking “Why shouldn’t I solve harder ones when my brain is not stressed and come back to the easier ones?”. Take a look at some of the reasons why you should not do it below.

-It wastes your time.

-If you solve easier ones first and you are at least sure of getting them right, it keeps your body motivated and improve your brain function to solve difficult ones.

-If you solve difficult ones first and you don’t get them, you become frustrated that you won’t be able to solve even the so-called easier ones.

-Ask yourself, what is the probability of getting the difficult questions right when eventually you don’t have time to solve simpler questions.

Have you now seen the reason why you should not solve difficult questions first and the negative effects of doing so?

What to do : Solve easier questions first. It will help you to bag enough marks and save time to come back to difficult ones.

#4. LACK OF PROPER TIME PLANNING

Time planning is another factor you must consider during examinations. Take a look at the JAMB that was just concluded where candidates are given 120minutes to solve 180 questions. This means that candidates have two-third minute(40seconds) to solve each question.

Depending on the subject, you might decide to use 60seconds for calculation-based subjects like Physics and Mathematics and 20-30seconds for theory-based subjects.

As the case might be, lack of time planning is another common mistake students are found guilty of. Students use more that the proposed time for each question.

As a result, they waste their time only to be left without a lot of question with with little time to solve them. This which I won’t want you to fall victim of is what you must consider.

What to do : Do proper research on the number of question and amount of time that will be given. Plan your time and don’t use more than the proposed time on each question.

If you discover you are wasting too much time on a question, move on to the next question. You must ensure you come back to it when you are through with other questions.

#5. YOU FAILED TO CROSS-CHECK

No man is born mistake-free. Students are liable to make mistakes during examination. The real mistake however is when student fail to correct their mistakes.

Have you ever written an examination that you felt you should cross-check and something tells you you don’t need to?. This might be because you are in a rush or you want to do something after the examination. Don’t make this mistake!

What to do : Ensure you cross-check your answers to see if there is any mistakes.

NOTE : Don’t be in a rush while cross-checking, take your time!.

#6. NOT HEEDING INSTRUCTIONS

Students also make the the mistake of neglecting instruction during examination. You might think examiners don’t take it serious, but yes they do!. Each instruction given to you in the examination hall determines whether you pass or not.

What to do: Always heed instructions. Don’t start when you are not told to, if you are told to answer 4 questions, don’t attempt 5questions.
