Some youths on Tuesday protested at the National Assembly, shutting down the main entrance after security officials allegedly denied them access.
According to reports, the protesters are members of the ‘I support #NottooYoungtoRun’ movement who seek a constitutional backing for young Nigerians to be able to vie for elective positions.

The National Youth Service Corps has announced the deployment of 2000 corps members to Gombe state.
The Scheme’s spokesperson in Gombe, Margaret Dakama, said in a statement adding that the orientation course would begin from Wednesday, July 26 to Friday, August 15.
Dakama said, “In Gombe State, about 2,000 prospective corps members are expected to report at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp at Amada Science Technical College for the orientation exercise,”.
She, however, advised prospective corps members to report to camp on time as the registration and verification exercise by midnight of July 27.

Nigerians on twitter have reacted to Kayode Bello’s expulsion from Law School for challenging the school authority over the poor state of facilities in the school.
Bello, popularly known as Kay Bello, an alumnus of the University of Ibadan was recently expelled after a disagreement between him and the school management.
Some of those who know him on campus in the Premier University have described him as an active and outspoken student who always wants to get his voice heard about issues he believes are affecting students welfare.

However, some twitter users have been praising the 34-year-old student for always speaking out, others have criticised him for fighting the school authority.

On the other side, as many continue to praise him for his bravery by challenging the authority, others strongly criticised him for being controversial all the time.
Another twitter user believed his expulsion is justified as Bello chose to ignore the call of the school authority when he was summoned to hear his side of the story.

Bello according to many of his colleagues is a very active, outspoken but very controversial. But while many criticised him for challenging and disobeying the school authority, the question others are asking is why is Kayode Bello a law student, if he can not challenge the Law School Authority.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has decried the incessant blame on the colonialists for Africa’s underdevelopment.
Ambali said this on Monday in Ilorin at the 8th International Students’ Day and Public Lecture organised by the Centre for International Education (CIE), University of Ilorin.
The VC said that Africans should rather reach a unanimous decision to seek ways of utilising the continent’s remaining resources for developmental purpose.
The VC, who was represented by the Deputy-Vice-Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, noted that Africa had the largest reserves of precious metals in the world.
According to him, this precious metal deposits consisted of over 40 per cent of gold reserves, 60 per cent of cobalt and 90 per cent of platinum.
“There are also abundant oil deposits that can be converted to wealth and benefit the majority,” he said.
The don said that developing Africa was a shared responsibility between its leaders and the people.
Ambali said that bad leadership had however made it difficult for the continent to breakeven.
He said that in many African countries, the needy and neglected people were subjected to harsh living conditions, adding that such needed to change.
The VC said that Africa could only develop when the countries agreed to unanimously work together.
Earlier, the Director of CIE, Prof. Mohammed Ibrahim, disclosed that the students had improved greatly compared to the previous year.
He added that the centre produced the best accounting student in 2016 and others were also engaging in innovative projects.
President of the Unilorin International Students Association (UISA), Mr Kaba Musa, thanked the University for giving the association a platform for cultural integration.
The Osun State government has expressed shock over the suit filed by joint unions of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) to stop the auditing of the university’s accounts, as recommended by the visitation panel set up to investigate and find lasting solution to the crisis that has crippled the institution.
The government called on parents, students and other stakeholders to prevail and plead with the unions to stop frustrating sincere steps of owner governments to get LAUTECH back on track, saying that it was not happy and uncomfortable with the prolonged strike that has kept the Nigeria’s future leaders at home.
Osun State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Adelani Baderinwa, in a press statement on Sunday, said the state government found it shocking, unheard of and counter-productive the suit filed by the unions at the Oyo State High Court.
Baderinwa explained that the auditing of the LAUTECH, Ogbomoso accounts was recommended by the Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) led visitation panel, and the two owner states had appointed a reputable accounting firm, KPMG firm to do the job.
He added that the LAUTECH unions, apart from chasing out the KPMG workers in the university, have persistently been working against the recommendation of the Olanipekun panel, except where the owner states are asked to raise fund.
The commissioner, who noted that the owner states are eager to resolve issues involved in the institution’s crisis, urged the unions to be sincere and support the owner states in their bid to get the school back on track, describing the suit by the unions as unpatriotic and ill-conceived.
According to Baderinwa, contrary to submission by the unions, the owner states have effective contractual agreement with KPMG on the forensic auditing job.
He also explained that, contrary to the Nigerian Senate’s assumption, there is no crisis on the ownership of LAUTECH, maintaining the Supreme Court has clearly stated the owners as Osun and Oyo states according to a 2012 judgment by the apex court .
Baderinwa said, “The last time LAUTECH accounts were audited was in 2012, and a sum of N400 million was in question then. LAUTECH has 97 different accounts at this time of Treasury Single Account policy.
“The Wole Olanipekun panel recommended auditing of the university’s accounts as a way to address the crisis holistically.
“The Osun and Oyo states entered into effective contractual agreement with KPMG, a reputable auditing firm. KPMG workers were harassed and chased out of the university by the unions.
“The unions have also gone to court stop the forensic auditing as directed by the visitor of the institution, it’s worth noting that the two owner states have committed a total sum of N13.626Billion to University since 2011 aside over N10 Billion that has come to the University as TETFUND and NEEDS as well over N12 Billion declared as IGR for about 5 years now and we deserve every right to find out the way the money was spent.
“We wonder what the unions stand to gain by approaching court to stop the auditing. Do they have something to hide?
“How could they militate against a genuine and transparent move to get LAUTECH out of the unpleasant situation? We make bold to say that the unions’ action is unbecoming of a group of academicians and patriotic workers of the university. We appeal to them to give peace a chance.”
THE leadership of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo State, yesterday, announced the resolution of the crisis in the party in Uhumwonde Local Government Area of the state, commending the leader of the party in the council, Mr Charles Idahosa for his cooperation.
The resolution was sequel to the recommendation made by the Senator Domingo led committee, which investigated the alleged anti-party activities levelled against a former member of the House of Representatives, Mr Samson Osagie and 30 others during the September 28, 2016 governorship election in the state.
The committee however, called for peace in the interest of the party and urged Osagie to lead others to meet Idahosa who is the leader of the party in the council to make peace.
Consequently, the state Secretary of the party in the state, Mr Lawrence Okah, former Deputy Governor of the state, Mr Lucky Imasuen, reconciled both groups at the residence of Mr Idahosa, where they all promised to bury the hatchet in the interest of peace.
Okah who disclosed this to Vanguard, said, “We are happy that it is over now and we thank Mr Idahosa for receiving his children as he promised. We are happy for the humility shown by all the parties and I can tell you all is well now in our party in Uhumwonde.”
The Nigerian Law School in Abuja has expelled a University of Ibadan graduate, Kayode Bello after he allegedly had an argument with another student over a seat in the lecture room.
The 34-year-old student according to the Punch was bundled out of the school library by law school officials and policemen attached to the Bwari Police Station on the day he was expelled.
Bello’s problem with the Law School authorities started shortly after he gained admission into the school in 2016.
Prior to his expulsion, Bello had reportedly complained to the management about the leakage of the sewage pipe in his room’s toilet.
Explaining events that led to his expulsion from Law School, Bello said his earlier complaints about the state of facilities in the school were not addressed.
In an interview with the Punch, Bello explained the reason why the school expelled him.
“The class is usually overcrowded. There are no enough chairs in the lecture room and we have issues over seat reservation. At a point, the Head Marshal, Mr. Akinyemi, announced publicly that there should not be seat reservation again because it was causing problems.
“That day, I met Chidima and other persons sitting on some chairs. There was a book on a vacant chair. As I made to sit on the vacant chair, Chidima said she was keeping the seat for a student. I said I would leave when the person came.
“When the lady came 20 minutes later, Chidima angrily told me to vacate the seat. I told her that her approach was wrong. In the process, a marshal came and took both of us to Mr. Akinyemi’s office. He asked me to look for another seat. I made him to realise that he was the one that gave an order on seat reservation, but he ignored me.
“I went to report the matter to the school’s Chief Security Officer, Mr. Ogunboyan, but he was not in the office. I called him on the telephone and he asked me to be patient, saying he would address it when he came back.”
The student said that the CSO took him to Akinyemi, who accused him of being rude.
“I said I was not rude, but was trying to let him (Akinyemi) realise that he didn’t do justice to the matter brought before him,”
According to him, the school official later turned around to accuse him of inciting students against the school management saying that his room was inspected on March 20, but nothing incriminating was found.
“On March 21, the CSO and the Head of Academic Affairs, Mr. Osamolu, came to my room in the midnight and forcefully evicted me. I paid over N300,000 as school fee, of which N60,000 was for hostel accommodation. They handed me over to policemen at the school’s police post. When I explained what happened to a policeman, he was surprised. He gave me a space to pass the night.
“When I returned to the hostel the following day, I met the door of my room broken, while my bed had been taken away. I reported at the Bwari Police Station, but a policewoman I met there requested money to buy a case file, which I declined to provide.
It was also reported that the school authority summoned him to hear the side of the story but according to him, a cockroach would not win a case in the panel of fowls
Nigerians students have however, been reacting to Bello’s expulsion as many said he was fighting for a right course while others think his approach was wrong.

The Management of the state-owned Edo University, Iyamho,(EUI) says the institution was established to essentially cater for academically-endowed students and the wealthy in the society.
The Vice Chancellor(VC) of the institution, Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) on Monday, in Iyamho-Uzairue, in the Estako-West local government area of Edo.
He said: “the idea behind the establishment of Edo University by the founding fathers is neither to replace nor compete with the existing Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.”
“But rather, to complement it in terms of providing world-class education with the best of infrastructure to academically-gifted students and the rich, who can afford the fees.”
“People have questioned why former Gov. Adams Oshiomhole did not upgrade AAU, than establishing a new university altogether.”
“Apart from its being capital-intensive to either renovate or bring in the needed infrastructure, the idea was to provide a different brand of education to the people.”
“We are offering world-class infrastructure and state-of-the art facilities at EUI; that is why our fees are high.”
According to him, the fees range from between N400, 000 and N450, 000 a session.
“And that depends from which perspective you are looking at it.”
“If it is from the perspective of a private university, our fees are very low indeed, because there is no private university that charges anything lower than what we offer.”
“And only one or two public universities charge the same fees as us and that also depends on the quality of infrastructure and programmes on offer.”
“The idea of the founding fathers is for anyone to have an ambiance of everything he desires abroad in any university environment here,’’ Aluyor said.
According to him, the university authority has also assembled first class academic and non-academic staff to complement the infrastructure and facilities, to ensure that the students are well groomed in character and in learning.
The VC added that management had introduced an entrepreneurship programme for its students to prepare them to “become employers of labour rather than those seeking for labour.”
“We have, therefore, set up facilities for entrepreneurship training for all our students, irrespective of their course of study, to make them to become independent on graduation.”
“We are proposing a grant of between N5 million and N10 million for any graduating student with the best entrepreneurship proposal.”
“The University Council is still trying to fine-tune the modalities,’’ he said.
Aluyor disclosed that management abhors indiscipline among staff and students, hence the withdrawal of some pioneer undergraduates and erring staff.
“I am proud to mention that we have a dress code among our students, while all our lectures are multi-media assisted.”
“We may not be proud of this information that in our first year, we had less than 80 students admitted. But I can tell you that we had cause to expel four of them.”
“We may be young; but it does not mean we will accept every Dick and Harry as students.”
“I think what we did was showing capacity to instill discipline.”
“We have also had cause to sanction three members of staff. We are not happy to have sent them into the unemployment market.”
“But we are saying that if you can not measure up with the standard we have set down, you certainly can’t be part of the vision of the founding fathers of this university,’’ he said.
The VC disclosed that at its inception in 2016, the National Universities Commission (NUC) only approved two faculties, namely the Arts and Social Sciences and the Sciences, respectively, to offer courses such as English, Mass Communication, Biochemistry, Mathematics, Microbiology and Computer science.
He said that the NUC later approved for the university, three additional faculties namely Law, College of Medicine and Engineering, but added that “we will only admit students into the Law department this new session.’’
Edo University, Iyamho, is a state government-owned tertiary institution founded in 2016. It is located in Iyamho, a town in Etsako-West local government area of Edo State.
On March 23, 2016, the university was approved by the NUC as Nigeria’s 41st state university. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes.
On March 27, 2014, the Edo State House of Assembly passed a bill for the establishment of a University of Science and Technology at Uzairue.
The University was, however, changed to Edo University and its location to Iyamho.
President Muhammadu Buhari says he is making good progress in London, United Kingdom where he is currently receiving medical attention.

According to a statement on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President made the disclosure in a “thank you” letter he wrote to the President of Guinea, Alpha Conde, for the nationwide prayers held last week by Guineans for his recovery and good health.
Adesina said the President had earlier made a phone call to Conde, who is the current Chairman of the Assemblies of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
Buhari’s letter to Conde dated July 24, 2017, read, “I thank you for your kind and thoughtful action in organising nationwide prayers for my good health. ” It is a gesture that I will forever cherish and treasure.
“Your Excellency will be pleased to hear that I am making good progress, and as soon as doctors advise, I shall return to my duties and continue serving the Nigerian people who elected me and are daily praying for my recovery.
” In an earlier letter, Buhari was said to have also accepted his nomination as leader of the ‘2018 AU Theme on the Fight Against Corruption’, which came from African leaders at the 29th Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on July 4, 2017.
“While thanking you for the kind words and for the nomination, I wish to express my readiness to accept this new important role and to reiterate my commitment to contribute towards our collective efforts to strengthen good governance and development on the continent.
“I, therefore, look forward to working closely with you in the realisation of this objective,” Buhari was said to have written in the acceptance letter.
A teacher has been arrested after he reportedly gave a student he impregnated, a concoction to drink in order to abort the pregnancy at Sefwi Akaatiso in the Western region, Ghana.
According to Amponsah Edmund who narrated the incident to Rainbow Radio said, the 17 year old student Akua Afriyie, was bleeding profusely after she took the concoction.
He said, the student dated the teacher, identified as Asafo Adjei for two years at the DA Primary School and invited the victim to his residence on several occasions to wash and do other menial jobs for him.
According to him, the teacher threatened to fail the victim in her exams if she refused to date and have sexual encounters with him.
The two year relationship he said, resulted in a pregnancy, which the victim later confronted the teacher with and he [Asafo Adjei] gave her the concoction to drink on the guise to abort it.
However, the victim started bleeding and when was quizzed by the mother why she was bleeding, she confessed that her teacher made her to drink a concoction in order to abort the pregnancy.
The Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha has reacted to statement credited to former aviation minister, Femi Fani Kayode concerning the images showing All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftains in Abuja House, London with President Muhammadu Buhari.
Fani-Kayode has described the images as fake and added that Okorocha, who conveyed the message, was a liar.
In his reaction to the former minister’s claim, Okorocha described him as a spoilt child.
The governor responded through his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, saying, “The guy (Fani-Kayode) is a spoilt child, one of those whose parents over pampered they hardly talk like human beings. Apart from somebody who went into government, he is not known for doing business.
“I wonder if he has ever worked and all of a sudden he had political appointment.
“He has nothing else to brandish apart from the father’s name. Remove his father’s name; I don’t think he is a human being.
“Rochas grew from the scratch. By the grace of God and hard work, he is where he is today. But that one apart from coming to politics what else does he have to brandish?”
Ahead of 2019 general elections, 15 registered political parties have formed a new political group, under the aegis of Coalition for a New Nigeria (CNN) with the aim of fielding a consensus candidate in the next presidential election to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The 15 political parties include, Labour Party (LP), Alliance for Democracy (LD), Democratic Peoples Congress (DPC), Action Alliance (AA), Progressives Peoples Alliance (PPA), Young Democratic Party (YDP) Democratic Alternative (DA) and National Conscience Party (NCP). Others are People Democratic Change (PDC), United Democratic Party (UDP) and National Action Congress (NAC).
Addressing newsmen in Abuja, during the official public presentation of the new group yesterday, the national chairman of LP, who also doubles as the coalition’s chairman, Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, said all the parties involved will work together to ensure its common candidate emerges victorious at the next election.
“After several consultations on the political and economic situation of the country, we, the following political parties to be known and addressed as Coalition for a New Nigeria have decided to chat a positive course for a new Nigeria,” he said.
Another member of the coalition and the national chairman of the DPC, Olusegun Peters, said the intention of the coalition is to field a consensus candidate for the next presidential election.
“This coalition has been working and strategizing for three months to see how we can run a successful government in Nigeria to effect the real change in the country.
We are working on how to present a credible presidential candidate for the 2019 general election. So, we are not working in collaboration with either the APC or the PDP, but this coalition will present a credible presidential candidate for Nigerians in the next election,” he said.
On whether the coalition would later metamorphose into a merger, Abdulsalam said: “It will remain a coalition and we are not contemplating a merger, each party remains independent and autonomous, but we are to come together to support a new government in 2019 at the centre.”
The coalition’s leader also said the group is committed to pursuing economic, political and internal restructuring of Nigeria, empowerment of youths, women and persons with disability.
He added that the body would strive to respect the rule of law and other democratic institutions so as to build a nation of great dreams “where equity and justice shall be the guiding principle.”
