Lagos State Government To Teach 1 million Students Coding By 2019 In An Initiative Called “Code Lagos”

The Lagos State Government has unveiled “Code Lagos” a computer programming initiative for students. According to Akinwunmi Ambode the Lagos State Governor, the initiative is geared towards meeting the ever increasing demand for technical skills. Akinwunmi Ambode who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule at a function held in Lagos recently, said the primary aim of the initiative “is to meet the growing demand for technical skills” and increase a workforce that would be conversant with global trends and provide solutions to socio-economic problems. Governor Ambode said With the new concept, Lagos State has joined the league of technology-compliant nations that had recognized the importance of harnessing the power of technology for the success of their nations and nation-states. As the 21st century world is becoming increasingly reliant on technology, forward looking governments and policy makers, social impact organizations, and profit-driven institutions are taking proactive stance by investing in technology education for a better workforce. According to the Governor, computer programming will be introduced into the curriculum of public schools in Lagos  by January 2017 and there will also be over 1,000 coding centers scattered across the state. One million students in Lagos are expected to have knowledge of computer programming by the year 2019 in preparation for access to a technologically advanced future. The governor implored people living in Lagos to embrace the initiative as it’s short term goal is enabling students in the state to harness, create and leverage on 21st century opportunities. And in the long term it seeks to increase employment and business opportunities in the technology sector while enhancing the state’s global competitiveness. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank Olemoh, stated that; The new initiative is aimed at using technology to drive the economy and infrastructure development of the state, as it is envisioned to make Lagos the technology frontier in Africa. Private investors were also asked to key into the new initiatives, as the state would continue to create an enabling environment conducive for investment.

Nigeria may suffer scarcity of cow meat soon – Agric Minister, Audu Ogbeh

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh says that Nigeria may suffer scarcity of cow meat in the very near future. The Minister spoke yesterday ahead of the National Conference on Transformation of the Livestock scheduled to hold in Abuja from Tuesday. According to him, the expected scarcity could be attributed to the huge number of cows consumed daily without commensurate calving. The Minister disclosed that Nigeria faces an economic danger if the number of cows slaughtered and consumed as meat on a daily basis is not considered. In his words, ‘the way we are consuming cows, slaughtering them is quite alarming. Lagos alone consumes 6,000 cows a day, that’s the figure at abattoirs, not figure from birthday parties and burial ceremonies and so on. Imagine what Port Harcourt consumes; or Umuahia, Abuja, Kano, Kaduna and Maiduguri. If you add it up, we may be eating up to 80,000 to 90,000 cows a day and we are not calving as many. Which means a day will come, if the West Africans don’t come into Nigeria with their cows, we may find out we have no cattle. So, that’s an economic danger that faces us’.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said it will not disclose when it will hold its meetings to consider the Federal Government’s offers, aimed at resolving the ongoing strike. The ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, said this on Sunday while responding to our correspondent’s inquiry as to when the union would meet to examine the Federal Government’s offers and resolve the strike. The union and the Federal Government’s delegation held a 14-hour meeting on Thursday, after which they issued a communiqué, in which ASUU was asked to revert to the government within one week. The ASUU President had on Friday said in an interview that he could not determine when the union would call off its strike until its members met to decide the next course of action. This is also as the National Association of Nigerian Students on Saturday promised to meet the ASUU executives and consider the government’s offers with a view to ending the strike. The NANS spokesperson, Bestman Okereafor, had said this in a statement released in Enugu State. When contacted to comment on when the union would meet to consider the government’s positions, the ASUU President said in a text message, “Good morning. Sorry. We don’t tell outsiders the arrangements of our meetings. Have a great Sunday.”

“I’m Not A Ritual Killer, Only Killed Her After I Had Sex With Her” – UNIPORT Student Confesses

Suspected ritual killer, Ifeanyichukwu Maxwell Dike, who escaped from the custody of the Rivers State Police Command last month, has revealed how he managed to get to Jos, after been rearrested by the Plateau State Police Command. Dike, a 300-level Physics student at the University of Port Harcourt, was apprehended by a vigilance group on his way to dispose off the body of 8-year-old Victory Chikqmso, whom he allegedly kidnapped, raped and murdered. He, however, escaped at the state CID, barely 24 hours after being paraded. But the Plateau State Police Commissioner, Mr. Peter Ogunyanwo, said the culprit was rearrested in Jos, after breaking into a house in Barkin Ladi to steal. Dike while speaking with journalists, said he travelled to Jos from Port Harcourt through a trailer that loaded goods to Jos. “I came to Jos on August 21, 2017 because I was trying to run away from the alleged ritual offense I was said to have committed, but I am not a ritual killer. I only had sex with the girl and cut off her body while trying to escape from the environment, but I am not a ritual killer,” he said. While speaking on why he was arrested trying to robbed a house in Barkin Ladi he said: “I thought it was an abandoned house because I was looking for a place to hide so that people will not identify me, but unfortunately the owner was in the house and he raised alarm then I was arrested.”

Ivorian footballer, Herve Guy diagnosed with heart problem

Al-Qadisiyah FC of Saudi Arabia have allowed their Ivorian player Hervé Guy to leave the club for treatment after doctors advised them against using the midfielder due to a medical issue with his heart. The club’s director, Ghazi Aseri  says, ‘doctors warned us not to use Herve in matches after medical examinations showed he has a myocardium problem. We allowed him to travel out of the country for more examinations’. The 33-year-old Guy joined Al-Qadisiyah earlier this year after four years with Moroccan side Ittihad Tanger.  He was a member of Ivory Coast’s Under 20 World Cup squad in 2003, and began his club career with Bastia in France followed by a move to Ivorian side Stella Club d’Adjamé. His club says they will reinforce their squad but insist they will continue to support Herve Guy in the meantime.  “We will add another player to our squad as Herve will need time to recover. We will not fire him from the squad, and we will support him and wish him a quick recovery,” Ghazi Aseri said.

Photographer, TY Bello, pays tribute to Nigerian Tax Guru, Olanike Disu, who died 24hrs after celebrating her birthday

Popular female tax guru, Olanike Disu, who is widely called Madam Tax, died on Monday, September 4th, barely 24 hours after celebrating her birthday on Sunday, September 3rd. Until her death, she was a director at the Lagos Inland Revenue Service.  Celebrity photographer, TY Bello, took to her IG today to pay her glowing tribute. According to TY, Mrs Disu who lost her husband some months back, had asked her to take her portrait photos because she was terminally ill and needed her to take some good photos that people would remember her by when she dies. Read TY’s heartfelt tribute below; OLANIKE DISU: BEAUTIFUL FOREVER ( part 1) I remember meeting her many weeks ago ..she walked up to me and asked if I was TY Bello.. the photographer ..”I’ve been looking for you ” she said.. She pulled me in .. looked straight into my eyes and said ‘ I really really want you to take my portraits .. I’m terminally ill . I’d like your images of me to be what people remember me by ..’ I want the photos to be happy and very beautiful I froze.. and tried to pretend like what she just said didn’t knock all the air out of Me..but she never stopped smiling .. ‘ when do we take these photos Ty?..she had said something so heavy .. so profound and I didn’t know how to react . We exchanged numbers and she sent me a message soon after ..but I still didn’t know how to take it in..until one morning ..I was praying and reading Isaiah 61:The spirit of the lord is upon me .. anointed me ..to bring beauty for ashes .. the oil of joy for mourning .. then I heard .. “call Mrs Disu. “ I did .. and I gifted her a portrait session for a few days later .. She came in a little quiet at first but I saw her spirit lift as the hair and makeup started to come together .. “TY!! I look beeeeautiful.. ” that was how a most amazing day began with this beautiful woman with very deep dimples ..we had a blast!! .. singing .. dancing .. playing dress up with her daughter .. Belly laughs ..we had an incredible session . At some point in the middle of the shoot .. as we changed outfits ..she looked excitedly at me and said .. TY .. you know what? IM GOING TO BEAT THIS THING! .. I looked at her and responded .. ‘that’s the spirit .. you absolutely will!!’She gave me a High five and we continued one of my most exciting shoots till date . She ended the day by saying a heartfelt prayer for me . I remember telling someone her shoot was Gods gift to me .. she brought it all to me .. beauty in the purest form and the oil of Joy in Isaiah 61..I was so inspired and lifted .. it also helped me put what I do into proper perspective .. that its really not about me and my gift .. that the people I get to meet ,bond with and photograph are Gods gift to me . Mrs Disu sent me prayers .. bible verses and inspiring write-ups every day after taking her photographs .. she also sent a beautiful thank you note when she got her photos .. and found time to send gifts to the beauty squad she met at the shoot . It was her birthday last sunday .. her daughter told me she was so happy .. she also did something really strange .. she kept sending her portraits to every one she knew .. “she was up till the wee hours of the next morning sending out the photos .. and laughing .. we kept teasing her about it but she wouldn’t stop” . She died later on that day .. I guess it was her way of saying goodbye . I remember @freezeedah sending me news of her passing .. I was a mess .. I was shocked ..and disappointed ..she was meant to beat this .. she had changed the narrative ..she told me herself .. ! I didn’t understand it .. until I got to spend a few hours with her children two days ago . They described what her last days were like .. she way joyful.. peaceful .. she found her own way to say goodbye .. she was ready . As I sat in her Wake keeping today and listened to person after person come out and testify about her beautiful spirit and how she lived everyday to the fullest .. I also remember certain things she said to me during the shoot .. how she wanted her children to know she gave it EVERYTHING and did her very best . It occurred to me .. she was right .. she did ‘beat this thing ‘ .. !she didn’t let it stop her from living .. till she took her last breath ..she lived and loved and laughed and smiled till the very end !! She was ready ..She was prepared .. unfortunately most people don’t get that opportunity .. to prepare for eternity .. and say goodbye . It got me thinking .. if we all lived 100 years more .. it still would go by really fast .. the Bible says our lives are live vapor.. eternity is certain and every day is one day closer to when we meet our maker .. but are we ready .. that’s the question . Kogi State Polytechnic uncovers N145m Salary Scam

The Director-General, Kogi State Bureau of Information and Grassroots Mobilisation, Alhaji Abdulmalik Abdulkareem, says the Kogi state government has blamed the discovery of N145 million fraud in the salary voucher of the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, for the delay in the payment of July salary of its workers. The government’s statement was in response to the threat by the institution’s Academic staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) to embark on an indefinite strike over non-payment of July salary of its members. “Kogi State Government affirmed that the discovery of N145 million fraud in the salary vouchers was responsible for the delay in payment of the July salary. This is based on facts obtained from the office of Auditor -General of Kogi State”. The ASUP had threatened to direct its members to embark on strike if the July salary of its members was not paid by September 11.  Andulmalik faulted the position of ASUP and other unions in the polytechnic, saying that the delay in payment of their July salary was self-inflicted. He alleged that some accounts staff of the polytechnic bloated the salary vouchers to defraud the state government of N145 million.  According to him, the salary was delayed to give room for a thorough investigation into the alleged fraud.  The director-general said the state government had recovered N145m from the bloated wage bills.
