A 16 year old boy has died, days after passing his Post UTME to study Medicine and Surgery at the University of Ilorin. In a mail sent to SDK, his relative wrote: ”The person in subject was a close relation of mine, his name was Mubarak Razak by name and 16 years. . He applied for Medicine and Surgery at University of Ilorin after being denied admission last year when he applied for Anatomy scoring 206 in UTME, immediately after graduating in a private secondary school in Ilorin, Kwara state. . He then struggled to have a better UTME score, 327, this year and passed POST-JAMB excellently scoring 72% when he suddenly died after a brief illness last week Saturday night. . He was survived by 3 siblings, his father, a civil servant(Mr Razak Owolabi) and Mother,a government school teacher (Mrs Aminat Razak). I just taught I should share this story because to me he left an indelible mark in this world, he was a nice, quiet boy and so young. And I believe that it’s not how far you go in life but how well. University Of Ilorin ‘Has Become A Terrorist Organisation’ – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has said the University of Ilorin ‘has become a terrorist organisation as far as industrial relation is concerned.’ ASUU in a statement on Sunday by Dr Ade Adejumo and Dr Deji Omole Zonal; Coordinator of the Ibadan Zone of ASUU, and Chairman, University of Ibadan Chapter after the sacking the ASUU chairman in the school, Dr. Kayode Afolayan by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali said that it was the height of impunity to sack a person ‘for exposing the impunity, lawlessness and disregard for due process’ in the University. The statement read thus:- The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali took all these to an unprecedented height when in 2015, he smuggled his wife, Dr (Mrs) Taiwo Toyin Ambali, into the University through the temporary appointment route as Lecturer 1. By 2016, less than one year later, she had been promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer, when the regulation specifies at least three years before such a promotion could take place. ‘Our branch Chairperson, Dr Kayode Afolayan, on behalf of the union, signed a letter addressed to the Council to look into the infringement against the university Rules and Regulations committed by Prof Ambali. ‘However, rather that retrace his steps, the outgoing Vice Chancellor issued a query to the branch Chairperson, Dr. Kayode Afolayan, alleging that they circulated an unspecified “leaflet” against the Vice-Chancellor. ‘The Union promptly alerted members of the public to the evil plans of Prof Ambali to sack our officers in Unilorin. Just yesterday, 21st September, 2017, the University Administration completed another cycle of impunity, lawlessness and disregard for due process with the termination of appointments of the branch Chairperson. “This very unfortunate development has again exposed the evil going on in the University of Ilorin. The university has devised all means to suppress legitimate industrial activities in order to avoid exposure of its misdeeds. ‘Indeed, the university prides itself in its ability to “kill off” staff and students that are connected in any way to ASUU leadership. ‘This hate crime on the part of the university is usually carried out under the guise of “uninterrupted academic calendar”. Yet, many universities have also maintained a stable academic calendar without destroying union members or their careers. “To all intents and purposes, UNILORIN has become a terrorist organization as far as industrial relation is concerned. Equally worrisome is the seeming connivance of relevant authorities with Unilorin in its dastardly pursuit. For example, our union, since December 2016, had submitted petitions to the EFCC, ICPC and the CCB but until now results of “ongoing investigations” have not been made known to the public.. “Our union also wrote petitions to the Ministry of Education and the Visitor to the School but no concrete step has been taken. The silence by these relevant agencies and authorities casts serious doubt on the commitment of government in the anti-graft war especially in the University of Ilorin where there are glaring manifestations of corruption. This has emboldened UNILORIN to embark on the victimization of the whistle blowers in the university. “Our union wishes to reiterate that it will not sit by and watch the continuous victimization of its members in the University of Ilorin. We warn that the crisis of the University of Ilorin is once again on the verge of ballooning into a national crisis reminiscent of 2001 when the same university sacked 49 academics in one fell swoop. “The union calls on all well-meaning Nigerians and the appropriate authorities to intervene urgently to restore justice in the university and stave off a needless crisis. Members of the public and the press are also to take note that, in line with the union’s constitution and code of practice, the purportedly sacked Chairman of the branch remains the bonafide Chairman of the Union in UNILORIN.” “The University of Ilorin had on the 19th September, 2017 in a letter titled: “ Termination of Appointment” signed by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council of the university E. D. Obafemi stated that “Council at its 155th meeting held on Monday 28th August 2017 considered the report from the 41st meeting of staff disciplinary committee held on Wednesday 7th June 2017, 8th June 2017 and Thursday June 2017 and approved that your services are no longer required. Consequently it directed that you should be relieved of your appointment. Accordingly your appointment is hereby terminated with effect from the date of this letter

However, academic-wise most students want to have money so as to live a comfortable life and they tend to get distracted while looking for money. You as an entrepreneur or self-skilled individual whose sole purpose is to make business boom no matter what comes and doesn’t care to do away with whatever might likely interfere tend to loose focus on academics. Don’t misquote me, having a business or an handy work to do is very beneficial and boosts your Resume’ but don’t let that distract you from your main goal. If possible find a way to balance both studies and business. 3. RELIGION With Whatsoever religion you may belong to don’t be carried away. This has cause alot of disaster to most students. However, without making any direct reference to any religion in particular but from past experiences this is common to the ” Christian brothers and sisters” who neglect classes, assignments and other academic necessities in order to fulfill their respective posts in their various place of Worship and pray hoping a miracle would happen. Eve the Bible (book of knowledge to Christians) said “make hay while the sun shines” you quit your studies just to appear in your church or other places of worship just to fulfill all righteousness it is regarded as pure insanity to repeat this same process every semester as a student and expect different answers. There is Time For everything, when the time is Due, you worship your God in any form you can and any language you dim fit. Beware don’t be fooled by various churches and other forms of religion who tend to brainwash you into leaving your studies and ignoring your main point of coming to the Higher Institution. Your Studies first then any other thing can follow. 4. NONCHALANT ATTITUDE The “i don’t care” behavior is now rampant nowadays among youths and students nowadays. Most students feel they are already at the limit in their academic life and don’t really care what could happen at anytime. They feel it’s not compulsory anymore and it’s of no use, they tend to ignore relevant and valuable information concerning their academic life. Some on the long run stop coming to classes and stop doing assignments. Most these attitude are mainly influenced by friends and either lack of money or availability of money. a. – LACK OF MONEY Depending on the background of these kind of individuals they tend to loose their vibe for academic pursuit and see no future in the long run therefore get distracted because they can’t fund it any longer and are desperately in need of money which links up with my earlier highlighted Point ” Love of money” . b. – AVAILABILITY OF MONEY This is common to students who comes from rich homes or background who see no use of been focused on academics, because they have a mind set that their future is already in place no matter what they come out with and therefore they are blinded with this fact. 5. BAD COMPANY Friends vary and comes in different forms, entangled in a bad company ruins it all, your plans, your goal and all other things you have in mind. Bad company tend to get you distracted with the Sweetness of life as it is believed to be. They derail your attention from academics, and if care is not taken they tend to lead you to a very dangerous part. Consequences of moving with bad company will result in the following ;- -Cultism -Suspension -Examination Malpractice -Destruction of school properties -Excess intake of Alcohol and Illegal Drugs. All these things mentioned are caused by bad company which leads to a damaged life. They are mere distractions which can cause a great deal of problems in one’s life.
