$6.9m deal: Give Jonathan fair hearing, says Babatope

A member, Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, has called on the Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to give former President Goodluck Jonathan a fair hearing in the yet-to-commence probe of the purchase of $6.9m mobile platforms.

Speaking with our correspondent in a telephone interview, on Monday, Babatope urged Buhari not to make his war against corruption selective.

He said, “Let’s wait for the reaction of former President Jonathan. We have only heard one side; we must hear the other side. If Buhari is going to investigate, we must ensure that innocent people are not victimised. Former President Jonathan’s name should not be dragged in the mud. He should be given a fair hearing.

“We must appeal to Buhari not to continue with selective justice. We are not saying that he shouldn’t probe but he must not give a dog a bad name in order to hang it. I want the government to come out with concrete facts and not speculations on this matter. Let them get their papers right. Once you find anyone guilty, bring him or her to justice.

“Buhari’s war against corruption must not be a one-way traffic. Let them investigate everybody be you in the PDP, APGA, APC or any other party. All of us must succumb to Buhari corruption war. But the war must be fair to all.”

A source in the Presidency on Sunday disclosed that the Federal Government was set to beam its searchlight on the alleged purchase of three mobile stages costing $6.9m by the Jonathan administration.

According to a document, which was obtained from the Presidency on Saturday, the deal was allegedly carried out by Jonathan; his Chief Security Officer, Mr. Gordon Obuah; and a former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The fund was said to have been withdrawn from one of the numerous accounts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

The $6.9m (about N1.37bn) was said to have been withdrawn for the purpose of buying three pieces of 40-feet mobile stages for use by Jonathan during mass public speaking events.

According to the document, apart from the fact that the sum for the stages was “incredibly inflated”, there is currently no evidence that the stages were bought since the money was withdrawn.
