See Photos – OAU 100-Level Student Commits Suicide Over ‘Poor Grade’

A 16-year old 100-level student of Microbiology at the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife – Osun State – Mercy Afolaranmi, has killed herself. Miss Afolaranmi took ‘Sniper’ days after she wrote on Facebook that she wanted to see God’s face and speak with him face to face. Obafemi Awolowo University’s Chief Security Officer, Babatunde Oyatokun, said, “We got a call that one of our students took poison. We got to hospital to realise that she mixed rat poison. She gave us the contact of her parents but before they arrived, she already gave up due to the effect of the poison she took,” he told Premium Times. Her fellow students and a neighbour also revealed that Mercy killed herself due to poor grade. A neighbour, Bimpe Oni, said the student, who lived off-campus at Sabo area of Ile-Ife, died on Thursday, after she took “rat poison mixed with battery extract.” Oni said the late student committed suicide because of “emotional pressure.” Aisha, Miss Afolaranmi’s colleague in the Faculty of Science, said the deceased had ‘E’ in CHM101 (Chemistry for first year students), a reportedly dreaded course for year one students in the science and technology related faculties. She disclosed, “Mercy often isolated herself in class and looked depressed. She told me she had ‘E’ in CHM101 and has been going around unhappy before this incident.”

See Now – Another Man Replaces Bill Gate As ‘The Richest Man In The World’

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is now the richest person in the world for the second time. On Friday morning, Amazon stock opened up more than 8% higher than Thursday’s close, adding nearly $7 billion to Bezos’ net worth. But thanks to a 7% spike in Microsoft’s stock overnight, it wasn’t quite enough to put him ahead of Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates on Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaire Rankings. Bezos had a net worth of $89.7 billion, as of the start of trading on Friday, while Gates had a net worth of $90.1 billion, up $550 million from yesterday. Then by 10:15 a.m. Eastern, Amazon stock had climbed nearly 2% since the market opened, adding $900 million to Bezos’ net worth and putting him in the No. 1 spot with a net worth of $90.6 billion versus Gates’ $90.1 billion at that time. Amazon stock surged in after-hours trading on Thursday after the company reported strong third quarter earnings. Amazon reported $43.7 billion in revenue, well above the $42.1 billion analysts expected. Whole Foods, which Amazon acquired in August, made up $1.3 billion of total revenue for the quarter. Bezos became the richest person in the world for the first time three months ago as Amazon stock hit an all-time high on July 27, just before Amazon reported its second quarter earnings. But Bezos’ first time at the top of Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires List only lasted a few hours. That same day, Amazon reported a big miss on earnings in its second quarter, leading to a drop in the e-commerce giant’s stock. Only today has Amazon stock returned close to its previous high, as the stock market responded positively to Amazon’s third quarter results. When Forbes published The FORBES 400 list of richest Americans earlier in October, Bezos was the second richest person in America, worth $7.5 billion less than Gates. Bezos first joined the Forbes 400 in 1998, one year after Amazon went public, with a net worth of $1.6 billion. Update: Bezos ended the day as the richest person in the world with a $93.1 billion fortune, up $10.3 billion from Thursday. He is currently $3.1 billion richer than Gates, who ended the day with a net worth of $90 billion.

Finally!!! You Can Now Unsend WhatsApp Messages (See How To Unsend It)

Come to think of it,how many times have you fired off a WhatsApp message only to be hit by that sudden, terrifying thought – ‘I really shouldn’t have sent that’. Well at last there’s a solution. After months of development WhatsApp have started rolling out the Delete for Everyone feature, which allows you to recall messages after you’ve sent them. This applies to text messages, gifs, video, pictures… pretty much anything you can send on WhatsApp, however it must be done within seven minutes of sending the message. How to recall messages on WhatsApp The much anticipated feature is easy to use. Simply highlight the message you wish you didn’t send, select Delete from the menu and then hit Delete for Eveyone. It’s only available to certain users at the moment and only on the latest version of WhatsApp, so head over to the App Store and download all those updates you’ve been continually putting off. WhatsApp say the feature will be useful if your message ‘contains a mistake’, but we all know the new feature will really have three functions: 1. Damage control when you accidentally post a message to the group chat slagging someone off. 2. Letting you backtrack from a risky message to someone you’re flirting with. 3. The last line of defence when you accidentally send a message about last weekend’s illicit behaviour to your mother. However, the people you are messaging can still see the message before you delete it (WhatsApp can’t delete things from people’s brains, after all), and even if you manage to recall a message before the other person returns to their phone, they will still be able to see ‘This message was deleted’. WhatsApp will also let you know if the recall wasn’t successful, just so you know if you need to send a grovelling apology message or not.  Metro UK

Babcock University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ademola S. Tayo – We Spend 20 Million Naira On Electricity Monthly

Vice Chancellor of Babcock University, Prof Ademola S. Tayo has stressed the importance of quality in the running of the institution. He said the university was not-for-profit, hence its provision for work study programme, endowment funds, among other initiatives, to assist indigent students’ access to quality education. Prof Tayo, who spoke during a visit to Matori, Lagos State Head Office of The Nation newspaper said: “One of our core values is excellence and we would not compromise. But at the same time, because of the philosophy of quality education, we introduced the work-study programme whereby the indigent but diligent students would use their hands to work so that they can augment part of the fees needed to fund their education. “They work in the cafeteria, library, etc. They get paid and that has helped many of them. We also have parents’ consultative forum where parents partner with management, so that we have a pool of funds that children who lose their parents while in school can have access to, in order to fulfill their dreams. “We also have the ‘adopt a child scholarship’ where we reach out to our host community. Also, we serve as guarantor for parents to access loans for their children’s education. But most importantly, we believe in frugality. Our university is not-for-profit. Nobody shares one naira. It is ploughed back to make the system work better.” The vice chancellor, who was accompanied by the institution’s management team noted that the institution was being funded solely with earnings from its bakery, Guest House, water factory and other industries, with only two per cent subsidy from its proprietor, The Seventh Day Adventist Church. He added that the university spent about N20 million monthly on electricity. Prof Tayo noted that the university’s fees were not too high for the services provided, “as it runs 24-hour power supply and the fees also cover tuition, accommodation, laboratory, among other expenses.” He said the institution will be graduating its pioneer medical students in December, informing that the students have completed their various degrees. The Medical School, according to him, was established in 2012. He said: “One of the areas of excellence that we want to carve a niche in this country is in the area of medicine, which we started in 2012. We have our accreditation from the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and National Universities Commission (NUC), International Board of Education, National Postgraduate College and the West African College of Physicians. This December, we will turn out our first graduates in the medical school. They have completed their clinical rotation in India.” Managing Director of The Nation, Mr Victor Ifijeh pledged the organisation’s support for the educational development of the nation, while stressing the organisation’s dedication to objectivity, fairness, integrity and balanced reports. He lauded Babcock University for its achievements in the education sector, and its swift rise to global standards. Responding, Prof Tayo acknowledged The Nation for her growth in its ten years of existence noting that “The Nation is a force to reckon with. Your newspaper is always at the forefront. We want to thank God for the role you have played in shaping the public opinion by your accuracy and the way your news are reported”

Kwara State Polytechnic Denies Increasing School Fees

kwaraKwara State Polytechnic, KWARAPOLY has dismissed reports claiming that it had raised fees. Contrary to widespread speculations among students, the authorities of Kwara State Polytechnic has denied increasing school fees of student. According to the Deputy Registrar (Information&Publications) of the institution, Malam Moshood Amuda who spoke to our correspondent substantiated his claim with an official memo from the Office of the Bursar said that there is no truth in the speculations on school fees increment. Students have been peddling the rumours that the Kwara State Poltechnic authorities’ had increased tuition fees arbitrarily. The students sent out a whatsapp meme within themselves “INJUSTICE ANYWHERE IS A THREAT TO JUSTICE EVERYWHERE “  The students accused the management of increasing tuition fees to N75,500 (seventy five thousand five hundred naira only) as against a previous fee of N32, 500 for indigenes and n38,700 for non indigenes. In the attached memo, ND1 and stalite, returning ND2 students are to pay N52,000 while HND 1 and HND2 students are to pay N58, 500 respectively. Also in the momo, Non Indigent ND 1 and ND 2 students are to pay N72,000 while HND1 and HND2 students are to pay N75,500. This is a total negation from what the student earlier rumoured and publicized on social media: “ Pertaining to the issue on the ground concerning our tuition fee for the 2017/2018 academics session and we the starlight i.e. returning student is the most affected . I think we are all aware that N75,500 is what is actually seen on our individual portal instead of 32500 for indigene and 38700 for non indigene.” “At the beginning of this issue we are thinking that maybe is systematic error but it’s quite unfortunate that for the past couple of days now the issue is still not rectified and presently the school deem it fit to released the list of the newly admitted student on that same portal that we the stalite thought is having systematic problem.” “And secondly there is this printout that is circulating online which indicating the affirmed said amount N75,500 that is to be paid and there is one adage that says “in every rumor there is the possibility of truth”. The students ask why such an increment lack sensitivity to the plight of Nigerians in spite of prevailing economic hardship in the country. With the response of the Kwara State Polytechnic management, the air is cleared on the speculations passing round among students all over Nigeria and plan of possible students protest is also averted.

See The 6 Types Of Lecturers You Will Find In Nigerian Universities (No. 1 Are The Most Annoying Ones)

Some universities lecturers can be caring, some can be so annoying, while some receive high qualification in womanizing. See below:- 6. The IDGAF You see these ones, they just don’t care, if u like be kissing each other in his class. It’s your life and your Father’s money. All he does is come in say what he has to say and get out if you like get it if you like don’t get it, it’s your problem. Their class is always noisy most times. Only the bookworms that sits at the front gains from their lecture. And their questions are mostly the toughest. 5. The Respected Ones Both students and lecturers respect them. Somehow somehow they’ve been able to earn it. Students re always quiet in their class, u’ll always want to listen to what he says, they re mostly the gentle and kind type. 4. The Womanizers This category of lecturers is very rampant, they are always very lively funny and accommodating. They notice every single lady in their class, they’ll be the one to know that u used a purple lipstick today but u used apink one yesterday, they re always calling ladies to answer questions in their class. U’ll hear. “You stand up yes you putting on mini skirt. What is so so so and so. Lady: keeps quiet for long. Lecturer: can u see your life, simple question u don’t know, instead u’ll be painting your faces about, see me in my car after the class, nonsense;”my sister u don enter am be that. 3. The Parent Type It’s the female lecturers that falls into this category most. They re the ones that tells you to remember the home u came from, how your parents sold their clothes to pay your school fees, how u need to be serious nd make good grades. They’ll be the one to tell to raise up your hands coz you’re making disturbing their class. 2. The Wicked Ones They might be gentle, infact most of them are always gentle..they won’t say anything, but they re the ones that’ll make u get to 800level. U might be distributing their class, they’ll just be saying “keep quiet””keep quiet,” u wont know that he’s already marking your faces. U’ll just be seeing 39F. Nd u’ll be like “omo that course simple die, if I no get A make I die” after exam. 1. The Strict One You see these types of lecturers ehn, don’t just mess with them, they don’t give a Bleep who you are, whether you are a slay queen or you are a father of four. They’ll wash you if you misbehave. Students fear them due to that fear factor.

5 Departments In OAU Where  It is Almost Impossible To Have First Class Degree

OAU is one of the Universities that rarely produce first class students and the reason for this is best known to the lecturers. Obafemi Awolowo University is a ‘great’ institution that has over the years developed a culture of glorifying students’ failure. OAU is one of the Universities that rarely produce first class students and the reason for this is best known to the lecturers. Some lecturers in Nigerian Universities like to form bad guys with their students and they do that with first-class arrogance. A lot of students have had encounters with lecturers telling them they will not graduate, the lenient one would promise you a poor very grade irrespective of your performance in the test. Lecturers like these according to the students abound in OAU and they wear their principle glorifying failure like a badge of honour. Graduating with first-class from Obafemi Awolowo University is one of the most difficult things to achieve in Nigeria. It is almost impossible because some departments in the University have developed a culture of not producing first class graduates. While other departments produce graduates year in year out, these departments have proved that first class award is not a for everyone in their domain, not even for the most brilliant students. Recently, Aarinola Olaiya broke a 28-year-old record in the University as she emerged the first student of Surgery to graduate with distinction in 28 years. This prompted a conversation based on the conclusion of a Twitter Nigeria influencer that lecturers in a faculty or department that does not produce a first-class student in five years should be fired. A lot of people reacted to this tweet and called out the department in OAU where it is difficult to make first class. So, if you are considering admission into these departments, you have to prepare yourself for the culture. The culture of glorifying failure in OAU. 1. English The OAU English department has not produced any first class student in more than three decades. According to a student of the department, the last distinction graduate of the department is now an old senior lecturer in the department. And ever since, no student has been dimmed brilliant enough to merit the award. 2. Geology: If making first class in the study of the earth and its structure was a passport to heaven, no student studying Geology in OAU would make heaven. It is that certain. So certain that the lecturers usually prepare the minds of the students that they can not get first class no matter how brilliant they are. Geology is one of the most dreaded departments in this university and for decades, no student has been celebrated in the department. 3. Surgery: In Surgery department, it is a good news that no student has been able to make first class for the past 28 years. This seems to be a department where making first class is seriously frowned at. Unfortunately, for the department, a student of the department, Aarinola Olaniyan recently broke the jinx and her fellow students could not but celebrate her victory over the department. 4. Political Science: This department has also failed to produce any first class graduate in so many years. This culture has even made some students to give up on chasing first class because first class has not happened to any student in the past and is not likely to happen in future. 5. Chemistry: According to a graduate of this department, graduating with distinction in Chemistry is not as terrible as it is in Geology but it is rare to come across a first-class student in the department. It takes like three to four years to see a first class graduate in this department, it is a serious issue but not as serious as the case in Geology and medical faculty. However, this is not to say Nigerian Universities should distribute first class award to every Tom Dick and Harry, nevertheless, the students deserve to be rewarded appropriately for their efforts rather than victimizing them because the department or faculty wants to maintain a record of no first class.

2019 presidency: Shekarau declares interest

A former Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has informed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and various stakeholders of his intention to contest for the presidency in 2019. Confirming the development to newsmen on Wednesday, his spokesperson, Malam Sule Ya’u Sule, said Shekarau, had already sent notification letters to the PDP and all relevant stakeholders. Sule explained that Shekarau, who was the governor of Kano State had since communicated his political ambition to various elders, community leaders, opinion leaders, political associates and religious leaders regardless of their ethnic and party affiliations. “Malam Shekarau deliberately refused to make his ambition public because he does not want the relevant stakeholders to read it for the first time on the pages of newspapers. He first notified them before making it public. He is now making necessary consultations,” he said. In a letter, which he personally signed and sent to one of his political associates, Malam Hassan S. Indabawa, dated August 22, 2017, Shekarau said soon after the 2015 general elections, there had been various calls by individuals and groups from many quarters urging his candidature to contest for the presidency in 2019. Just few days ago, former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, also sent a letter of notification to PDP leaders and members on his readiness to try his luck at the presidency in 2019.

Buhari reacts to Nigerians’ prayers

Special Adviser to the President, Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, Thursday in Abuja commended Nigerians for the outpouring of prayers and show of goodwill to President Muhammadu Buhari since he returned to the country. Receiving a delegation of well wishers to the President, led by Amb. Eze N. Ebere, Adesina said President Buhari deeply appreciated the prayers during his ill health, and after his recovery, from both the Christian and Muslim communities. He noted that the positive reviews on the President’s handling of conflicts in various parts of the country had been most encouraging for the administration, noting that the President remains focused in serving Nigerians, and ensuring an improvement in the lives of all. “The President really appreciates all the prayers, and will like to say a big thank you for your support for his leadership style and handling of the conflicts,’’ he said. Adesina assured the delegation of the President’s commitment and transparent leadership style, promising to deliver a letter brought by the group. In his remarks, leader of the delegation, who is also the National Patron of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), said the association remains thankful to God for restoring the health of the President. “We are here to commend the President over his leadership style, especially the way he handled the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) issue, and others, by ensuring that peace is restored across Nigeria,’’ Ebere said. He pledged the association’s continued support for President Buhari’s administration. The Justice of the Peace, an association, gave Adesina a special recognition as a “Peace Conservator’’.

Aisha Buhari replies Senator Misau over allegations of SUV gifts from IG of Police

Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, has denied allegations made by Senator Isa Misau, that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, bought two SUVs for her. In her response on Thursday, the First Lady denied any such thing. She simply tweeted: “I am still using my personal cars”. Misau, while speaking to a committee investigating his accusations against the police boss, said he has documents which disclosed that Mrs. Buhari requested for vehicles from Idris. “I still have some contract papers that the IG himself submitted to the court, where the First Lady through her aide-de-camp requested a Toyota Hiace and a Sienna jeep. “The same day that the ADC wrote, the IG minuted that she should be given two jeeps. And it is not part of the appropriation. If you look at the appropriation, there is nowhere they said the First Lady should be given two jeeps,” he said.

Nigerian govt recovers stolen $85m from UK

Nigerian Government on Thursday announced the recovery of $85m from the United Kingdom (UK). It said the money is part of stolen funds from the controversial Malabu Oil deal. Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami stated this at the ongoing consultative meeting on assets recovery in Abuja. Malami decried the negative attitude of some countries that are still holding on to stolen assets, despite several treaties signed with the Federal Government to facilitate the return of loot. Metuh reacts to allegation that he ‘betrayed’ Jonathan

Olisa Metuh, former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Thursday declared that he will never connive with anyone against former President Goodluck Jonathan. Metuh was reacting to a statement credited to the Save Ijaw Nation Group, where they claimed his appeal to an Abuja Federal High Court to compel the former president to testify as his witness was a grand plot to get him “off the hook.” In a statement he personally signed, the PDP Chieftain said it was “inconceivable and completely ridiculous for anybody” to think that he would for any reason betray or surrender himself to be used against Jonathan. Metuh also faulted the claim by the group that he connived with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to implicate the immediate past president. The statement reads, “My attention has been drawn to a release by the Save Ijaw Nation Group wherein they alleged that the order given by the court in my trial was negotiated by me as a means of letting me “off the hook”. They also stated that I surrendered myself to be used to drag down former President Goodluck Jonathan and impugn on his character and person. “In the light of this and in deference to the former President, I have elected to make these clarifications personally. “First of all, I state unequivocally that I am completely innocent of the charge against me and therefore have no reason to negotiate with anybody to let me off a non-existent hook. “It is therefore inconceivable and completely ridiculous for anybody to think that I would for any reason betray or surrender myself to be used against President Goodluck Jonathan, for whom I have immense respect and served diligently, without any apologies, in and out of office. “To what end will I conspire with the same set of people who singled me out to be humiliated and openly handcuffed while spreading all manner of malicious stories against me, most of which they even denied outright in court while others remain completely unsubstantiated? “Ordinarily, the content of the charge against me in the Federal High Court should not breed any worries but for the fact that it now appears that the anti-corruption fight has shifted the burden of proof to a defendant once an allegation is made. On the issue of conniving with the government against former President, Metuh said the Save Ijaw Nation Group may be “alarmed by successive media reports that he was ordered to be served on Tuesday with an instruction to appear the following day and subsequently given a five-day time limit; setting off a media frenzy as if the former president is needed for reasons more than a mere request by my lawyers for a corroborative evidence in my case. “I totally concede that this is not deserving of the status, person and image of the former President especially with his contribution and sacrifices to national development and sustenance of democracy in our dear country. “Without prejudice to all the foregoing, I accept that it was the need for corroboration of lack of mens rea on my part that led my lawyers to request for the evidence of the respected former President to assist them in proving my innocence. “However, with all the controversies arising from the reports of the said pronouncements and the attendant concerns thereof, I have instructed my legal team to revisit and review the entire issue of the subpoena. “In the past 20 months I have shouldered my travails personally and without seeking to involve any other individual and/or groups in this unfortunate saga. “I habour no ill feeling or malice towards none as I believe that with time, justice will surely be done in my matter,” he added.

(JUST IN) ASUU SET FOR OCTOBER 31st ; CALLS FOR REINFORCEMENT

👉Another round of strike action is looming in the nation’s Universities as academic staff counts down to the deadline for the implementation of agreements reached with the government which led to the conditional suspension of its indefinite strike action in September. ✍The government had signed an agreement with the *Academic Staff Union of Universities* as a result of the strike action embarked upon by the union to press the implementation of the memorandum of understanding entered into between both parties in 2013 as well as the 2009 agreement. ⏰A timeline of October 2017 was reached between the government and the unions for the implementation of some components of the agreement, especially the payment of shortfall in salaries and Earned Academic Allowances. But some lecturers revealed that barely one week to the end of the October timeline, the government has not implemented any aspect of the agreement, even when they claimed during negotiation that implementation has commenced. 🙋‍♂While suspending their strike action in September, *ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi* had said that the union was suspending its action conditionally to pave way for government to commence implementation of the agreement, stressing that the union will not hesitate to resume the action if the government fail to meet its own aspect of the agreement. 👨‍💼One lecturer who would not want his name in print revealed that _“The government has not done anything. We have not heard from them and it is just one week to the end of the October deadline. I can assure you that we are warming up and there is the possibility that from November 1, we will resume the suspended action”_   . He Noted.. *_🌐Olofofo News🌐
