To judge the character of a prospective borrower, several traits are analyzed by a bank to assess you. Some of these traits include; Successful prior business experience. An existing or past relationship with the bank (e.g. prior credit or depositor relationship). Referrals from professionals (lawyers, accountants, business advisers) who have reviewed your business proposals. Evidence of your care and effort in the business planning process. The amount a borrower is willing to commit to the business is also a good pointer to the character of the borrower. Ultimately, by assessing your character, banks want to know that if things go wrong, you will be there to ensure that the company honors its commitments to the bank. Even if you do well in the other C’s of credit, you will be refused a loan if the character test is failed. Capacity The Capacity of a borrower measures a borrower’s ability to repay a loan. A bank needs to be certain that the borrower will be able to generate enough cash-flow from his business to service the interest and principal on the loan. If you are a business owner, you will need to show the bank in your presentation a historical and projected cash flow of your business and compare it to the company’s projected debt service requirements. Commonly used metrics used by banks to measure the capacity of a borrower depending on the type of loan include; working cash flow ratio and Debt to Income ratio. If you are a salary earner, the bank will look at how long you have been at your job and how stable your job is. Capital The amount of capital a prospective business owner puts in a business shows how much equity you have in that business. A bank will believe that if you have none or a small percentage of your money invested in the business you are seeking funds for, it will be easier for you to walk away from servicing your debt if things go bad for your business. There is no precise measure or amount of enough capital, but it is specific to the situation and the owners’ financial profile. The bank will look at the borrowers’ investment in the business relative to his net-worth to ascertain the level of seriousness of the borrower. Collateral Sometimes things don’t work out as planned and the business may fold up. The bank will therefore need a secondary source of repayment. This is where “Collateral” comes in. If the company is unable to generate sufficient cash flow to repay the loan in the future, the bank will fall back on the collateral provided by the borrower. In most cases, the bank will want the collateral value to exceed the loan value. Some of the asset classes that banks are interested in as a form of collateral include; Real estate, Equipment, Accounts receivable and inventory. Conditions Conditions refer to the overall environment the bank is operating in. The bank will assess the conditions affecting the company, its industry and the macro-economy as a whole. The breakdown of the final examination conducted between August 15 and 19, 2017 revealed that a 72.7% pass rate with 211 Second Class Upper, 1, 046 Second Class Lower, 2, 999 Pass and 334 Pass. Overall, out of a total of 5, 891 students who wrote the final bar examinations, 4, 285 were successful while 1, 272 failed. The Provost of the College, Professor Olaide Gbadamosi was full of praises for the students and noted that “this feat of the two graduates has proved that UNIOSUN Law programme rank among the best in Nigeria”. Speaking with our correspondent, Mr. Ogunbodede clarified that the management had not proscribed the union. “The management of the institution did not proscribe the union but only suspended the activities of the union,” he said. He, however, insisted that the suspension was “inevitable” because of the reports of fighting among the union officers and to “also to allow the tenure of the present irresponsible leaders pass away.” While making conditional commitment to restoration of the union, he, nevertheless, indicated that it may not happen so soon – at least not the current academic session which covers the “tenure of the present irresponsible leaders.” The vice chancellor reiterated the call for responsible behaviour on the part of the students, whom he said should resolve their differences and make OAU a model to other institutions as condition for restoration of their union. The suspension of the union may have a negative effect on the hopes of recall of recently suspended students, whose sympathisers use the union as a rallying point of agitation. At least, four student leaders are on indefinite suspension over allegations of involvement in violent activities. But beyond that, the students now lack a body to engage the management on their behalf in the events of concerns over poor delivery of services. Before the latest development in the crisis prone institution, the union president, Oyekan Edward, was removed from office by the legislative arm of the union. The parliamentarians accused Mr. Edward of convening suspected cultists to the university campus ”to disturb the peace of the institution.” The motion for the sack of the president was deliberated by 51 members of the Students Representative Council at their sitting on Saturday at the Awolowo Café. Mr. Edward has dismissed his removal saying the process was illegal.

OAU Management Suspends Students’ Union Activities

The authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile – Ife says in order to forestall total breakdown of law and order and curtail acts of brigandage among students, it has suspended all activities of the University’s Students Union until further notice. The Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olanrewaju in a statement on Monday said that incessant fighting and unruly behaviour during their congresses and the recalcitrant attitudes of the leadership of the students’ union have made it inevitable for the University Management to suspend their activities. The statement read:-  Within a short period of its existence after its reinstatement, the Students’ Union have, over time, manifested misdemeanours that are unacceptable within the academic community. “Apart from the fighting between the Vice President and the Director of Socials in which head butts and broken bottles were freely used, the supporters of the President beat up the Speaker on June 29 and 30, while the Speaker’s supporters, in retaliation, beat up the President on September 15,” the statement read. The school management in the release also condemned the forceful release of students under investigation from Police custody on October 6, and the unwarranted vandalisation of peoples vehicles particularly that of the Ekiti State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). The spokesperson of the institution also debunked rumour of school fees increase. He said the fabricated threat of invasion by cultists is aimed at deceiving the students and to precipitate a crisis, capable of disrupting the academic activities of the University. “In the light of the above, the University administration, at it’s emergency meeting held on Monday, November 6, came to an inevitable conclusion that activities of the Students Union be suspended until further notice. The University administration hereby enjoins all students to go about their lawful activities unhindered while the suspension persists, The school management also warns that student who parades themselves as leaders or representative of students in order to cause disruption to University activities, under whatever guise, will be dealt with according to the University rules and regulations, codes of conduct.

UNIABUJA Gets Approval To Graduate Medical Students After 13 Years

The University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has received approval from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to prepare its medical students for the final MBBS examinations. This is coming 13 years after the university’s commencement of the medical programme. The UniAbuja medical school which took off in 2005 has witnessed series of crisis over the non-accreditation of its courses. According to a statement issued yesterday by the Acting Registrar of the council, Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi, the approval was sequel to the final accreditation visit to the university by the MDCN on November 1, 2017. The statement added that the situation changed two years ago with the provision of required facilities leading to the approval by the MDCN. The council urged the university to proceed with the processes leading to the final MBBS examinations for its students. It also directed that “You must notify council to send observers to the examinations at the appropriate time.” In another development, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the interim accreditation of the Computer Science and Microbiology courses of the university. Director of Accreditation of NUC, Dr. Noel B. Saliu, while conveying the commission’s updated review of the May/June 2017 accreditation results to the university in a letter, said the interim accreditation status was valid for two years after which the programmes would be revisited.

UNILAG Will Admit Only 8,000 Out Of 32,000 Applicants – VC

No fewer than 24,000 applicants to the University of Lagos who scored 200 marks and above will still be unable to secure admission in the institution in the 2017/2018 academic session. The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon Bello, gave the indication at a forum with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. He said that although 32,000 applicants to the university scored 200 marks and above in this year’s Unified Tertiary matriculation examination (UTME), Unilag would not admit beyond 8,000. Bello said that the university insisted that an applicant must also score at least 40 per cent in Unilag’s post-UTME before consideration for admission. “We know what goes on in our public examinations. That is why we insist on candidates undertaking our post UTME and scoring at least 40 per cent,’’ he said. According to Bello, who steps down as Unilag’s Vice-Chancellor on Nov. 11, the aim is to promote excellence. “We admit the best so that we can produce the best,’’ he stated. He said that the university held 75 inaugural lectures during his five-year tenure in an effort to promote scholarship. The professor of chemical engineering noted that the university had held a total of 374 inaugural lectures since its existence. Bello revealed further that the university produced 103 professors in the past five years, representing about 20 per cent of the 292 professors it had produced in its 55 years of existence. “They just don’t come and get them; the process of becoming a professor in Unilag is very tedious. “We have peer review from inside and outside and we have interview internally, so that at the end, you know why you are promoted or why you are not,’’ he said. Bello said that Unilag had to change its curriculum in a bid to sustain academic excellence. “We are neither a technology university nor a business university; we are comprehensive, except for agriculture. “The only agriculture we do is marine.’’ He expressed satisfaction at the performance of the university in its new fields of study such as cell biology and genetics. “When we started them, they were almost nothing. “Cell biology and genetics, for instance, are the ones that drive the health sector when you talk about working in the sub-cell region, especially in the area of In-Vitro-Fertilisation (IVF). He also expressed delight at the performance of the university’s creative arts department. “When we started it, some saw it as laughable. Today, most of our graduates are the ones making money in Nollywood,’’ Bello said. Bello, the 11th Vice-Chancellor of the university, came into office in 2012, following the death of the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adetokunbo Sofoluwe. Bello will be succeeded by Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the university’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics).

MAPOLY Crisis: Tension As School Management Locks Out Lecturers

The Management of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta on Thursday locked out members of the National Executive of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, in Nigeria from the school premises. This followed the declaration of indefinite strike action by the Academic Staff Union of the institution. The National Executive Council of ASUP which scheduled its press conference in the school on the “Deplorable condition of polytechnic education in Nigeria” had to hold the conference at the school gate. Speaking to reporters, the Union’s zonal coordinator, Olawale Omobaorun said, “They say we are not going to enter, and we are trying to tow the line of peace, we will stay at the gate and address the press.” He alleged that the state governor was after the Chairman of the MAPOLY Chapter of ASUP, Comrade Kola Abiola. He added, “The government of the state is after our chairman and that is why you are not seeing the chairman here today. “Let the world know that the life of Com. Kola Abiola is in threat. If anything happens we will be ready to face the government.” Also speaking, the ASUP President, Malam Usman Dutse lamented the sorry state of polytechnic education all over the country. The statement, which was read by the Vice President, Timothy Ogunseye, said, “If well harnessed will boost Nigeria’s technological know-how, improve ICT, create millions of employment opportunities and raise the level of both theoretical and practical technological literacy. The Union said governments at all levels had keyed to annihilation of the Polytechnic sector, which “feeds and caters for millions of youths and families. It cited some issues facing the sector, which include, “Sorry state of State-owned institutions; victimization of Union officers; withdrawal of allowances; among others. “Polytechnics and monotechnics belonging to state governments have continued to wallow in deplorable conditions. “Chapter chairmen in various polytechnics in the country have been sacked in glaring cases of victimization while there have been no intervention.” The Union also decried what it called “Infractions in the appointment of Rectors”, citing MAPOLY as an example. It said MAPOLY can “boast of about 30 chief lecturers with fifty seven Ph.D holders”

Nigeria is our biggest market and so it would not be a wise business decision to launch a product or service without proper testing. The launch of our pay per day service had to be properly done so as not to cause any technical disruption, hence the need to test for months and make corrections where needed before rolling out a hitch free service. Also, as a highly innovative company, we continually seek new ways to improve our customer experience and satisfaction and pay per day is one of such. Q: How was the service received by subscribers? Answer: Positively, as expected. Many of our subscribers have already started embracing the service. We get calls daily from customers seeking to get more information about pay per day so that they too can subscribe. I would say that this service has been much anticipated by Nigerians so we feel very happy to have pioneered the introduction of daily payments from as low as N60 in the pay TV industry. Our aim is to ensure that we deliver digital entertainment to every Nigerian home at very affordable rates and we will ensure that this is done int he coming years. Q: Is pay per view to be expected soon? Answer: I think many people misconstrue the pay tv industry for the telecoms industry. Technologically speaking, for the pay tv industry, it is almost impossible to select individual channels based on customer preference and charge for each. While we are not ruling it out completely because things may change in the future, I know this may not be happening anytime soon given the technology on ground. Q: What has StarTimes done recently to improve content? Answer: A lot. For example, we have upgraded our movie channels list and now have more safe channels for the kids to also enjoy. We also broadcast fairly recent new movies very new series from Hollywood. For our Nollywood fans, there are many channels dedicated to Nollywood movies and series now on StarTimes. Very worthy of note is that we will be broadcasting the Russia 2018 world cup live on StarTimes and this is in fulfilment of our promise to ensure that digital entertainment is delivered to every home. All our subscribers will be enjoying live matches of the world cup from the comfort of their homes without putting a hole in their pockets come 2018.
