Nigerian govt summons Turkish ambassador

The Nigerian government has summoned the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Hakan Çakıl. The meeting expected to hold on Friday was called over massive illegal shipment of arms from his country to Nigeria. Nigeria will express dissatisfaction over the situation and also demand immediate action to curb the menace. Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs, Col Hameed Ali (rtd.), said the service was collaborating with the Directorate of State Service (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) to tackle the increase in importation of illegal firearms. Ali, on Thursday, disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari discussed the matter with the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoan, at the on-going United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. It would be recalled that operatives of the Tin-Can Island Command on Wednesday apprehended another container containing guns, less than two weeks after similar discovery. Customs in a statement said the guns were found in a 20ft container with No. CMAU189817/8 from Turkey. “It was transferred to the enforcement unit, where 100% examination revealed 470 pump action rifles as against elbow plumbing plastics on its bill of lading”, it read in part. “Importer of this deadly cargo is Great James Oil and Gas Ltd, while the vessel is MV Arkas Africa owned by Hull Blyth. “This discovery brings to a total of 2671 rifles seized within the last eight months of this year.”

Court Seizes Senator’s House Over Alleged N1.5bn Contract Scam

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday ordered the temporary forfeiture of a 12-storeyed building belonging to the senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Peter Nwaoboshi, over an alleged contract scam of N1.5bn.

The said building which the court ordered Nwaoboshi, a Peoples Democratic Party member, to forfeit to the Federal Government is located at 27, Marine Road, Apapa.

Justice Abdulaziz Anka made the forfeiture order after entertaining an ex parte application brought before him on Monday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Joined with Nwaoboshi in the application were his two companies – Golden Touch Construction Project Limited, and Bilderberg Enterprises Limited.

The EFCC told the judge that Nwaoboshi, through his company, Bilderberg Enterprises Limited, got a N1.580bn contract to supply some construction equipment to the Delta State Direct Labour Agency sometime in 2010.

The anti – graft agency, however, claimed that Nwaoboshi’ s company supplied second -hand equipment to the agency while he actually collected money to supply new equipment, thereby short- changing the agency.

The EFCC claimed that Nwaoboshi later used the proceeds of the alleged scam to bid for and purchase the 12-storeyed building, formerly known as Guinea House, for N 805m in the name of his company, Golden Touch Construction Project Limited.

Arguing the ex parte application on Monday, the EFCC’ s lawyer, George Chia -Yakua, said it was in the interest of justice to order the temporary forfeiture of the building pending the outcome of investigation and criminal trial of Nwaoboshi and his companies.

He said the forfeiture order being sought was compliant with Section 44( 2) ( k) of the constitution and sections 28 and 29 of the EFCC ( establishment ) Act 2004.

After listening to the lawyer , the judge ordered the temporary forfeiture of Nwaoboshi’ s building.
